BRANDEL Richard C. Richard Charles Brandel passed away Friday, January 20, 2012, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was a lifelong resident of Toledo, born May 19, 1922, to Marie (Bittman) and Alphonse Brandel. Richard was a 1940 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. Rick served in the United States Army during WWII with the 102nd Division(Ozarks). On returning from military service, he began work at Superior Typesetting, where he met his future wife of 55 years, Esther Hoffman. He then worked at the Toledo Blade until his retirement in 1984. South Toledo residents have fond memories of Rick as the Pumpkin Man of Mapleway Drive every Halloween for over 40 years. Rick devoted many years after retirement volunteering at the Claver House. He was a resident of Swan Creek Retirement Village the past 5 years. Rick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther, and his sister, Catherine Taylor. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Steven) Hiss, Barbara (Mark) Spiro, Carol (Terry) Hepner, Thomas, and John (Margaret) Brandel; brothers, William (Alice) and A. FORSHEY Patrick D. Patrick D. Forshey, age 52 of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born in Toledo to John and Beverly Forshey, attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grade School and was a 1977 graduate of Bowsher High School. He married Mary Bruning on October 12, 1984. At one time Pat worked for Medicare Equipment Supply Co. and later worked as a Deputy Dog Warden for Lucas County. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Colleen; parents, John and Beverly Forshey; brothers, John A. “Biff” III, Jeffrey (Angie), and Jimmy (Jenny) Forshey; sister, Marianne (Jim) Pohlman and grandson Ronald Jones. ULMER Georgette A. Georgette A. Ulmer, of Holland, passed away Monday, January 2, 2012, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg with her daughter by her side. Georgette will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Theodore Ulmer. Georgette is survived by her loving children, Richard (Babs) Ulmer and Joyce Brainard; grandson, Joseph T. WALLERSTEIN Elaine A. Elaine Ann Wallerstein, age 81, a longtime resident of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, December 13th, 2011, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo, surrounded by her family. She was born February 19, 1930, to Herbert and Eleanor (Gunderson) Giwer in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Dr. Ladislao Wallerstein and her son, David Wallerstein. She is survived by her sons, Ernest (Peggy), Richard, Stephen (Cynthia), Jerry (Nancy) and Thomas (Cassandra) Wallerstein all of the San Francisco Bay area and daughters, Rose (Ken) Timmons and Carol (Deena) Wallerstein of Adrian, MI. Also surviving Elaine are 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. GOZDOWSKI Evelyn R. Evelyn R. (Wauters Kimerer) Gozdowski, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 90, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Evelyn was born September 6, 1921, in VanBuren, Ohio to Leon and Anna (Lauwer) Wauters and was a resident of Holland, Ohio for over 50 years. In 1939 she graduated from Haskins High School where she starred as a guard on the basketball team. Evelyn was an LPN at the former Parkview Hospital, The Toledo Hospital and Dana Nursing Home and also worked with the students in registration at The University of Toledo. Evelyn was a member of the Holland American Legion Post Auxiliary and volunteered for the Hospitality Kitchen at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish where she also belonged to the St. Francis Guild and the Daughters of Mary. She cherished most the time spent with her family. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Orren Kimerer and Edward Gozdowski. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (John) Kasmier, Marjorie Barnard and Diana (Rick) Waller; sons, James (Denise) Kimerer and Edward (Kerry) Gozdowski; brothers, Henry Wauters of Rehboth, Delaware and William Dibling of North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Alonzo Gozdowski, Madeline Kamer and Othella Hoyt; 11 grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. BRENNAN Robert Joseph Robert Joseph Brennan, age 94, of South Toledo, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011, surrounded by his loving family, in the Elizabeth Scott Community. Bob was born in Port Huron Michigan on December 5, 1916 to Joseph and Eleanor (Fisher) Brennan. The family moved to Cleveland Ohio in 1928 where he attended Cathedral Latin High School. The family then moved to Rossford Ohio in 1934 where he finished high school and attended the University of Toledo. Bob served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1943. He worked in sales for the former Koerber & Buckeye Brewery Company and later became Director of Sales for the former Commodore Perry Hotel until his retirement. Bob was a charter member of St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church and was a past president of their Holy Name Society; he was also an usher and coached the school’s baseball teams for seven years. Bob was a past member of the Maumee Elks, the Old Newsboys, the Kiwanis of Downtown Toledo and the American Legion. Bob was a devoted Notre Dame football and Cleveland Indians fan. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Brent Kahler; he is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean; children, James E. (Amy) Brennan, Nancy E. Kahler, William J. (Mary) Brennan; grandchildren, Joseph (Julie) and Colin Brennan, Ryan (Rebecca) Kahler, Robert and Andrea Brennan; great-grandchildren J.J., Joshua, Jonathan, and Ava Brennan; and his sister, Sister M. Hyacinth. BRIGODE Craig Thomas Craig Brigode, age 53, of San Francisco left us after a long and courageous battle with cancer on November 7th, 2011. Craig was born on March 12th, 1958 in Toledo, Ohio to T. Dale and Mary Frances (McManus) Brigode. Craig attended St. Rose Grade School and Perrysburg Junior High School. He graduated from St. John’s Jesuit High School in suburban Toledo in 1976, and later attended Bowling Green State University. He was a Boy Scout, and was in the marching band in middle and high schools. From the age of 14 he was working part time after school at Mills Hardware on Perrysburg’s main street. Moving to San Francisco, CA in 1979, he found work as a custom floor sander, renovating Victorian Houses. By the end of the 80′s Craig was utilizing his retail experience, working in several hardware and specialty paint stores in San Francisco. In 1979 Craig met his future wife, Nancy (Stafford). They have lived in the same house in the Inner Sunset for the last 31 years, which Craig extensively renovated himself. Craig most enjoyed camping and hiking, preferring not just Golden Gate Park but also the Peninsula and the Sierra, where he was a cross country skier. Other hobbies included model rocketry, following sports, and rock music (loud). He and Nancy had traveled all over the United States, and had visited Spain, Australia, and New Zealand as well. Craig was very proud of his over 9 years of sobriety, and was a faithful participant and leader in his local AA Chapter. He also cherished his shareholder’s certificate in the Green Bay Packers, who were, in his opinion, the real “America’s Team”. Craig’s remarkable courage and stoicism during his illness, as well as his ever present sense of humor, has been a source of inspiration and support for his friends and relatives. Craig was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister Darcy. In addition to his wife Nancy, Craig is survived by his sister, Karen of Perrysburg, Ohio; brothers David of Sonoma, CA; Keith (Denise) of Perrysburg; Bruce (Barbara) of Perrysburg; and nephews Nicholas (Amanda) of Maumee, Ohio, William of Columbus, Ohio, Andrew of Sonoma, Charles of Perrysburg, and Dylan of Sonoma; Mother and Father-in-law Marnell and Bill Stafford of Erie, PA; and beloved Cat SlartiBartFast. Craig belonged to the Church of Monday Night Football. A private ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, November 20th for friends and relatives. Donations are requested in Craig’s memory to the Brigode Family Science Scholarship Fund at St. John’s Jesuit High School.

ANDRUS Mary Ellen Mary Ellen Andrus died peacefully
on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, with her family at her side at the Hospice
Center of Northwestern Ohio in Perrysburg. She was a wife, mother and friend to
all who came to know her. Born on December 27, 1934, Mary Ellen was the daughter
of Mr. Harry and Helen (Bell) Johnson, both of whom preceded her in death. She
was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard, Sr. (1998) and son, Thomas
(2001). Mary Ellen was a secretary at the Shore Line Franklin Rail Road. In
October of 1953, she met the love of her life, Dick Andrus, at a Toledo Catholic
Club dance – and as they say, the rest was history. They were joined in marriage
on May 15, 1954 and became the proud parents of 6 children, Fr. Richard R.
Andrus, Jr. SVD (Chicago), Thomas Andrus (deceased) (Linda), Diane Lilly, Mary
Jo Gall (David), John Andrus (Cheryl), and Cheryl Foster (John). She was also a
grandmother to Brad and Christopher Lilly, Matthew and Katlyn Gall and Lizzie
Andrus. Dick and Mary Ellen also adopted another son, Kevin Rood (Diana). Also
surviving is her brother-in-law, James Andrus. When anyone ever asked which one
she was proudest of, her answer was always the same: “I am proud of all of our
children. There is something about each of them that makes them each very
special and lovable. That’s what I love about them” Mary Ellen spent her entire
adult life as a devoted wife (45 years), loving mother and grandmother, roles
that she invested her whole heart and life into and cherished dearly. After her
youngest entered grade school, Mary Ellen worked 8 years at St. Joseph’s in
Maumee as a lunchroom and playground supervisor. She also enrolled at Bowling
Green State University where she studies creative writing, drawing on all of the
many years of memories and experiences she had accumulated as a wife, mother,
and grandmother. Besides the love she had for her husband, children and
grandchildren, Mary Ellen also cherished her treasured friendships including her
Ursula graduating class, long time family friends and neighbors. Mary Ellen saw
the completion of nearly 76 years of life, not long by human standards. But she
really didn’t live by human standards but by God’s and by her living and her
dying was a powerful reminder that it’s not how long you live but how well!

Mary Ellen Andrus will take place on Sunday, November 6, 2011, beginning from
2-8 PM at Maison-Dardenne Funeral Home, Maumee, with a scripture wake service at
7 PM. Funeral services will begin Monday at 9:30 AM in the funeral home followed
by the celebration of the funeral mass at 10 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Maumee, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Donations to Hospice of
