(News Article) Joseph Salvatore Logiudice, a 35-year veteran of the glass industry who worked in research and development for Owens-Illinois Inc. and Glasstech, died May 12 in Alive Hospice, Nashville. He was 89.

Mr. Logiudice died of complications from liver failure, said his daughter, JoEl Logiudice, adding that he had been hospitalized about 10 days before going to hospice, where he was a patient one day.

He joined glass O-I’s research and development division on Westwood Avenue in 1951 after receiving a master’s degree in glass technology from the University of Toledo.

Ms. Logiudice said he worked on product engineering, including conducting experiments on materials ranging from metals and ceramic oxides and refining fire polishing mold seams on glass ceramics.

“He did a lot of work on surface treatment, like decals for the glass,” she said. “He worked on a product that today we know as CorningWare.”

After 27 years, he retired from Owens-Illinois and went to work at Glasstech in Perrysburg Township. He stayed with that company for eight years.

A native of Chicago, he graduated from Lane Technical High School.

Ms. Logiudice said he worked at General Electric in Chicago before joining the U.S. Army and being sent overseas to the Philippines.

After his discharge from the Army, he enrolled at Louisiana State Universityin Baton Rouge, where he received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.

While a student, he met the former Marie Claire Surgi at the Catholic Newman Center on campus. They were married Aug. 22, 1949, in New Orleans.

Their daughter said her parents moved several years ago from Sylvania to Nashville to be closer to Ms. Logiudice and a son. Mrs. Logiudice died Aug. 26, 2010.

A devout Catholic, Mr. Logiudice was active at St. Jude Church, where he was an usher and active in the parish’s annual summer festival.

While his sons were growing up, he was active in the Boy Scouts and was a troop leader. Ms. Logiudice said he also enjoyed gardening.

“We had an apple orchard in our front yard. He enjoyed devising methods for cleaning the apples so we could press them into making apple cider,” she said.

Mr. Logiudice and his wife also had a winter home in Bradenton, Fla.

“They were very active in that community. They loved to dance. They were forever going and planning dances. He was quite a jitterbugger,” his daughter said.

Surviving are his daughters, JoEl Logiudice, Maria Elena Gladfelter, and Vicki Valley; sons, Bill Logiudice, Joseph Logiudice, Vito Logiudice, and Francis Logiudice; brother, John Logiudice; 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass is to be said June 2 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 S. Main St., Sylvania.

The family suggests tributes to Special Olympics or Operation Smile.
