Father of Barbara Jo Hinds Cook ’78 passed away

Robert “Joe” Laker

Born in Toledo to Robert and Alice Hinds on February 6, 1924 and passed away November 19, 2013. He attended Scott High School where he was an Ohio high school champion swimmer. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. during WWII, he graduated from the University of Toledo with a business degree, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was co-owner and president of Luma Electric and Building Supply Company with his 3 brothers. In 1986, he was inducted into the Scott High School hall of Fame for Distinguished Community Service. He was a member, vestryman and chairman of a major renovation at Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a charter member at Laurel Hills Tennis Club and Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo and a member at Serendipity Tennis Club in Sarasota.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Nancy Donnelly Hinds; daughter, Susan Thetford (Dan); son, Thomas Hinds (Kathy); daughter, Barbara Cook; 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and brothers, Ron and John Hinds. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Hinds III and brother, James Hinds.

In lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to American Parkinson Disease Association and/or Trinity Episcopal Church, Toledo.

There will be a memorial service Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Toledo, downtown at St. Clair and Adams, where reception will follow services.
