Francis J. Wannemacher

Fran Wannemacher, 100, of Toledo, OH, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 11, 2017. He was born on February 1, 1917, in Defiance, OH, to Louise and Ella Wannemacher. He moved to Toledo in 1929. He married Dorothy Donahue on January 24, 1942, and they enjoyed 73 wonderful years of marriage until her death in 2015. They were inseparable and their lives were spent mainly around family, a strong-abiding faith life, and good friends and good times.

Fran started working for the railroad in 1941 and eventually became an engineer on the New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail and Amtrack railways. He retired in 1978 after 37 years of service.

Fran belonged to O.L.P.H. parish during his earlier married years and then moved into St. Patrick of Heatherdowns parish and became a Eucharistic Minister for 25 years. He and Dorothy attended daily Mass for many years until health issues forced that to cease – but the daily rosary never stopped for the two of them.

Fran loved good friends and good times – he and Dorothy loved square-dancing when younger and then the card games of Pinochle and Euchre. He was a fierce competitor. Grandchildren soon became aware of this trait and his inherent ability to win.

Fran is survived by his three daughters: Marianne (Jim) Reece, Sherry (Rob) Gibson, and Linda (Will) Szymanski; 8 grandsons: Ken (Tracy) Reece, Matt Reece, Greg (Nicole) Reece, Ray (Sue) Micham, Kevin (Debbie) Micham, Steve (Sara) Micham, Jason (Jamie) Szymanski and Andy (Jackie) Szymanski. He also had 21 great-grandchildren. Fran was preceeded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy, and his parents; also his brother Virgil, and sisters Mary, Ellen Davis, and Agnes Donahue (married to Dorothy’s brother.)

Friends and family may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Tuesday, May 16 from 2-8 p.m. where a Scripture Service will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 17, beginning at 9:30a.m. in the mortuary, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Church at 10 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their compassionate care.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Northwest Ohio . Please view and sign the online guest registry at
