Father of Susan Haupricht ’73, Cathy ’75 and Nancy ’80 passed away

Arlen Thomas Haupricht “Sparrow”, 84, passed away surrounded by family on July 8, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, OH. Tom was born November 16, 1932 at home in Holland, Ohio to William and Mary (Fleig) Haupricht and was the last survivor of fourteen children. He graduated from Holland High School in 1951. He married Marlene Mickens in 1954 and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Tom was a selfless and loving person who is best remembered for being a tireless and generous provider to family and friends. During and after his retirement in 1991 from Libbey-Owens-Ford (LOF), he offered his many skills to his children as they built their homes and completed renovation projects. He delighted in tending flowers, creating beautiful potted plant arrangements, and being a friend to the birds, squirrels, and wildlife who frequented his home on Swan Creek. He was always active, completing a half marathon and walking three miles daily until recently. He loved spending summers floating on the pontoon boat in the Maumee River and at the family cottage on Vineyard Lake. He adored and was adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For the holidays, he brought joy to his family and neighborhood with his challenging Easter egg hunts and his spectacular show of Christmas lights which lit up the cul-de-sac.

Despite his gentle demeanor, Tom is described as being a fighter. He was a survivor of open-heart surgery as well as prostate cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene, and five children, Tim (Pat) Haupricht, Susan Garling, Cathy (Denny) McLean, Tom (Diane) Haupricht and Nancy (Paul) Keeton; grandchildren, Stephanie (Sean) McGill, Shannon (Erik) Engevik, Katie (Jon) Aring, Emilee Haupricht, Cortney (Andy) Schoene, Nathan Keeton and Amanda Keeton; eight great-grandchildren. He is survived by sister-in-law, Carol (Chuck) Shanteau; many nieces and nephews. He shared many good times with Anna Mae, Cheryl, Kent and Janet He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Stephen Garling and 13 siblings.

Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2017 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio with the Rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Toledo, Ohio. Interment will be in Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
