Elizabeth Golden
11/23/1945 – 03/17/2021
Elizabeth Snyir Golden was born to Andrew and Lois Snyir (née Aumend) on Nobember 23, 1945. Called “Liz” by dear friends, and Beth Ann by her loving family, she attended Catholic Schools in Toledo’s Hungarian Birmingham neighborhood, going on to graduate from MacCaulley High School in 1962 and the University of Toledo in 1966. Liz worked nearly her entire career as a social worker at the Lucas County Department of Jobs and Human Services, retiring as a division director in 2001. She also had a career in real estate, working as an agent for Loss Realty for over a decade.
It was while working as an agency social worker that she met her first husband, Morris Golden, in 1970. The two were married in 1971 and had two children, Rebecca and Andrea. Liz was a devoted mother, spending many hours at gymnastics and dance practices, and spending weekends at recitals and gymnastics meets. She loved reading, and passed this affection on to her children, reading to them every night at bedtime, and later sharing mystery novels with her girls.
Liz loved travel, and treasured memories of cruises to Mexico and the Panama Canal taken with her beloved friend, the late Patty Murphy. Fourteen years ago, she met Mike Cochrane, her second husband and companion for many special trips – more cruises, and visits to casinos in Mississippi and Las Vegas. Liz loved spending time at casinos, and she developed a particular fondness for Ethel M chocolates, which are made in Las Vegas.
Liz was devoted to her husband and children, who spoke to her by phone every day, and spent as much time in person with her as possible, even during the pandemic. She loved cooking and baking, and was a very talented home chef whose chicken paprikash and roast beef were legendary. Every Christmas, she made Hungarian nut pastries, rolls and apricot lattice pastry, and her daughters plan to continue this tradition using her hand-written recipes.
She leaves behind many to cherish her memory, including husband Mike; her younger brothers, Andrew (Tish) Snyir and Michael (Barb) Snyir; her niece, Amy Snyir, and her dear friend of more than fifty years, Frances Wexler. Her daughters, Rebecca and Andrea Golden; and son-in-law, Andrew Castillo, will keep her memory forever in their hearts.
Elizabeth Snyir Golden left this world March 17, 2021 while recovering from pneumonia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Lois Snyir; her beloved aunt, Jean E. Aumend; and her first husband, Morris Golden. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a food pantry or other charity that helps people in need of food or shelter. Liz dedicated her life to helping vulnerable people navigate a rough system, so helping those in need is a lovely way to honor her life.
