Mother of Brenda ’85 and Donna Atkinson ’87 passed away.

Virginia Ruth Atkinson, 81, died peacefully on April 17, 2023 surrounded by her family. She was born in Toledo on June 19, 1941 to Paul and Mildred (Weber) Fanaff. Virginia graduated from Libbey High School and from nursing training at St. Vincent. She married her husband Tom, and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage together.
Virginia volunteered much of her time while raising her four children. She was affectionately known as the “lunch lady” at OLPH Catholic grade school. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader, a high school track official, and traveling with her sisters. Virginia and her husband Tom were avid University of Toledo Men’s and Women’s Basketball fans; they even traveled to Hawaii with the team.
She will be greatly missed by her children Brenda Mata, Tom Atkinson, Donna Burmeister and Ann (Kris) Allegretto; grandchildren Alex (Chelsea), Ciara, Cate, Andy (Molly), Connor, Meghan, Mandy, Megan and Julia; and 2 great grandchildren, Sophia and Matt. Her siblings Anne Sattler, Alan (Margie) Fanaff, Barb (Nick) Davenport, Margaret (Bill) Pedee, and Terry (Tony) Kremnetz and many dear friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Tom, son in law Abe Mata and nephew Ralph Griesinger.
Friends may visit at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S Reynolds Rd. on Monday, April 24 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. with a Scripture service at 7. The funeral will begin at Coyle on Tuesday, April 25 at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
