Joseph W. Leonard, Sr. passed away June 25, 2023 at Kingston of Sylvania. The son of James A. Leonard and Mabel (Ward) Leonard, he was born December 18, 1927 in room 406 at Mercy Hospital. Joe graduated from Gesu Grade School and graduated from Macomber after attending Central and DeVilbiss High School. At Macomber he developed a passion for commercial printing. His brother-in-law, Bill Sanderson, tutored him. Joe met the love of his life, the former Claramae Linenkugel, at a play practice at Mary Manse College where Claramae attended. They were married at Blessed Sacrament Church in Toledo on October 1, 1949. They had 5 children. Joe worked at RadMar Press right out of high school for 29 years as a pressman, foreman, and plant manager. He left RadMar in 1974 to join Blade Printing as Plant Manager and part owner. He would work there until he retired in 2008. Joe also had two letter presses in his basement at home to run smaller jobs on the side. Joe had an incredible work ethic and was a skilled craftsman. Joe also liked to play hard. He was an accomplished drummer who played at Brother Baker’s Bar (now the Village Idiot) in Maumee beside his trumpet playing neighbor, Reed Baker. Joe also enjoyed celebrating weekends with his neighbors and his family at the backyard picnic table. He earned the nickname, Joy Boy, bestowed on him by his neighbors. Claramae and Joe loved to dance, vacation at St. Pete’s Beach, watch the leaves change in Beulah, MI, and spend the holidays at home with their entire family. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage before Claramae’s passing in 2018. Claramae and Joe were charter members of St Patrick’s of Heatherdowns parish where all 5 of their children attended.
